Wali Kota Binjai di wakili oleh Sekretaris Daerah Kota Binjai, Chairin F. Simanjuntak, S.Sos, MM menghadiri sekaligus membuka acara Perayaan Maha Puja Thaipusam Kuil Shri Mariamman Kota Binjai Ke 146 tahun di Kuil Shri Mariamman Kota Binjai, Senin (02/02)
Dalam sambutannya, Sekda Kota Binjai menyampaikan ucapan selamat kepada seluruh umat Hindu di Kota Binjai atas terselenggaranya perayaan keagamaan tersebut. Ia menegaskan bahwa Upacara Maha Puja Thaipusam bukan sekadar ritual tahunan, melainkan peristiwa sakral yang sarat nilai spiritual, pengabdian, pengorbanan, serta ketulusan iman.
“Perayaan Thaipusam yang telah berlangsung hingga tahun ke-146 ini mencerminkan kekuatan tradisi dan budaya yang telah mengakar kuat serta menjadi bagian tak terpisahkan dari sejarah panjang Kota Binjai,” ujarnya.
Menurutnya, perbedaan di tengah masyarakat justru menjadi kekayaan yang memperkuat persatuan dan keharmonisan.
Pemerintah Kota Binjai, lanjut Sekda Kota Binjai, berkomitmen untuk terus memberikan ruang seluas-luasnya bagi setiap umat beragama dalam menjalankan ibadah dan tradisi keagamaannya sesuai dengan peraturan perundang-undangan yang berlaku.
Penetapan Upacara Maha Puja Thaipusam sebagai salah satu Calendar of Event Kota Binjai juga disebut sebagai bentuk komitmen pemerintah daerah dalam mempromosikan potensi budaya dan pariwisata. Selain itu, perayaan ini dinilai mampu memperkenalkan nilai toleransi dan kebhinekaan kepada masyarakat luas.
“Kegiatan ini diyakini dapat memberikan kontribusi positif terhadap peningkatan kunjungan wisata, pertumbuhan ekonomi lokal, serta penguatan citra Kota Binjai sebagai kota yang religius, berbudaya, toleran, dan inklusif,” tambahnya.
Perayaan Maha Puja Thaipusam Kuil Shri Mariamman Kota Binjai Dimeriahkan oleh Bazar UMKM Kota Binjai, Tarian Persembahan dari Sanggar Anggrek Hitam dibawah Naungan Dinas Pariwisata Kota Binjai, Barongsai, Reog Ponorogo dan Prosesi arak-arakan kereta kencana, pall kudam, dan ritual nazar tidak hanya menjadi ekspresi keimanan umat Hindu Tamil, tetapi juga menjadi ruang perjumpaan budaya. Tradisi ini diterima sebagai bagian dari identitas multikultural Kota Binjai.
Turut hadir dalam kegiatan tersebut perwakilan Dandim 0203/LKT, perwakilan Kapolres Binjai, perwakilan Kepala Kejaksaan, perwakilan Ketua DPRD Kota Binjai, Pembimas Hindu Kementerian Agama Provinsi Sumatera Utara Eli Rosa Tarigan, Ketua Paruman Walaka PHDI Sumut Dr. S. Siwajiraja, Ketua Kuil Shri Mariamman Kota Medan M. Chandra Bose, Ketua FKUB Kota Binjai Drs. H. Hamidan, Ketua PHDI Kota Binjai S. Siwa Kumar, Ketua Forum Pembaruan Kebangsaan (FPK) Kota Binjai, Ketua Yayasan Shri Shivan Kuil Binjai, perwakilan unsur OPD Kota Binjai, serta para camat dan lurah se-Kota Binjai.

The Mayor of Binjai was represented by the Regional Secretary of Binjai City, Chairin F. Simanjuntak, S.Sos., M.M., who attended and officially opened the 146th Maha Puja Thaipusam Celebration of Shri Mariamman Temple, Binjai City, held at Shri Mariamman Temple, Binjai City, on Monday (02/02).
In his remarks, the Regional Secretary of Binjai City conveyed his congratulations to all Hindu communities in Binjai City on the successful implementation of the religious celebration. He emphasized that the Maha Puja Thaipusam ceremony is not merely an annual ritual, but a sacred event rich in spiritual values, devotion, sacrifice, and sincerity of faith.
“The Thaipusam celebration, which has now reached its 146th year, reflects the strength of traditions and culture that are deeply rooted and have become an inseparable part of the long history of Binjai City,” he stated.
According to him, differences within society are a form of wealth that strengthens unity and harmony.
The Binjai City Government, he continued, is committed to continuously providing the widest possible space for every religious community to carry out their worship and religious traditions in accordance with the prevailing laws and regulations.
The designation of the Maha Puja Thaipusam Ceremony as part of the Binjai City Calendar of Events was also mentioned as a form of the local government’s commitment to promoting cultural and tourism potential. Furthermore, the celebration is considered capable of introducing the values of tolerance and diversity to the wider community.
“This activity is believed to contribute positively to increasing tourist visits, boosting local economic growth, and strengthening the image of Binjai City as a religious, cultured, tolerant, and inclusive city,” he added.
The Maha Puja Thaipusam Celebration at Shri Mariamman Temple, Binjai City, was enlivened by an MSME Bazaar of Binjai City, a ceremonial dance performance by Sanggar Anggrek Hitam under the auspices of the Binjai City Tourism Office, Barongsai performances, Reog Ponorogo, as well as a procession featuring a royal carriage parade, pall kudam, and vow rituals. These activities not only served as expressions of faith for the Tamil Hindu community, but also became a space for cultural interaction. This tradition is embraced as part of the multicultural identity of Binjai City.
Also in attendance were representatives of Kodim 0203/LKT, representatives of the Binjai Police Resort, representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office, representatives of the Chairman of the Binjai City DPRD, Hindu Community Guidance Officer of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of North Sumatra Province Eli Rosa Tarigan, Chairman of Paruman Walaka PHDI North Sumatra Dr. S. Siwajiraja, Chairman of Shri Mariamman Temple Medan M. Chandra Bose, Chairman of the Binjai City FKUB Drs. H. Hamidan, Chairman of PHDI Binjai City S. Siwa Kumar, Chairman of the Binjai City National Unity Renewal Forum (FPK), Chairman of the Shri Shivan Foundation of Binjai Temple, representatives of Binjai City Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD), as well as sub-district heads and village heads throughout Binjai City.
